Very busy, and very hot this last four or five days, and I’ve been wearing some variation on this outfit all that time. I saved the most visible of my maxi dresses/skirts for today, since it’s Visible Monday. Seriously, I have worn a long dress or skirt every day since last Monday (except for when in the garden, where I’ve been a LOT) and I can see this becoming a summer uniform, of sorts.

Right now, I am knackered, though, having shifted an enormous amount of stuff around the garden this afternoon and evening, so I’m throwing down the details, hooking up with the lovely ladies at Visible Monday (as always, hosted by Patti at Not Dead Yet Style), having a glass of wine, and calling it a night.

Details:

Denim Jacket: Gap, thrifted, remixed. The old favourite.

Necklace: Bijou Brigitte, Liverpool. Probably remixed.

Maxi dress: Dorothy Perkins, remixed. I bought this last summer and loved it so much (I especially adore that coral stripe near the bottom) that I could hardly wait to dig it back out of storage.

Bag: Topshop, remixed.

Sandals: Hotter.

Today’s weather: spectacular. As in, to my British-weather-degraded sense of temperature, verging on actually HOT. This gave me another opportunity to go with one of my favourite warm weather pairings, the maxi dress + denim jacket combo. I like it, because I don’t need to bother with hose, and not feel self-conscious about how pale and pasty white my legs look. It’s also insanely comfortable.

I will definitely be doing some seasonal swapping around with my wardrobe this weekend, because there are other maxis buried in the Rubbermaid bins, and I’m pretty sure I’ll be needing them now.

Details:

Sunglasses: Etienne Aigner, mixed. Maxis just call for gigantic faux tortoiseshell sunnies, to my mind.

Denim jacket: Gap, thrifted, remixed. I love this one for so many reasons, not least of which is the handy inside pocket I can drop my iPhone into, and thus, keep the ear bud cords from catching on everything.

Dress: H&M. This is a medium, and I should’ve gone with a small, which just goes to show you how bad sizing inconsistency is at H&M. Still, I love the black-and-blue graphic print very much, and the material is a very nice, heavy, viscose/cotton blend. No wrinkling and it hangs beautifully.

Bag: Oasis, remixed.

Sandals: Born, remixed.

Visible Monday rolls around again, and after a very long and busy holiday weekend of not wearing anything of note — lots of stuff to be done that doesn’t require fancy dressing, and also, I have just totally not been feeling it fashionwise over the last week or so — I tried to pull my act together. When I’m having trouble feeling inspired, I frequently choose a favourite colour combination or garment, and build my outfit from there. Pink and black is an old favourite, and Desigual always makes me feel happy, so this one was quickly and easily assembled.

With my current lack-of-self-generated-inspiration, I’m very glad tomorrow is this month’s Everybody, Everywear, so all I have to do is put together something out of pastels, and I’m golden. I’m pretty sure the current state of meh is largely due to the irritatingly indefinite transitional weather we’re experiencing, and once it settles into something that looks more like real spring, I’ll perk right up.

Cardigan: Gap, remixed.

Tank: Gap, remixed. It’s almost time to replace my black and white ribbed Gap tanks. These are absolutely vital basics for me, and the kind of garment Gap basically exists for. I get about a year’s hard wear out of them before they fade too much, and get demoted to sleepwear.

Skirt: Desigual, remixed. I love this skirt a lot, and one of the reasons I’m working on editing my wardrobe is because there are so many things I love and don’t wear nearly enough.

Tights: M&S, remixed. Also time to replace some of these. They wear like iron, but eventually they do pill a bit, and the elastic starts to weaken, and these are nearing the end of their life cycle.

Shoes: Nine West. Scored these in an unexpectedly-available UK 9 at Debenhams’ mid-season sale. They’ve got a nice, modest little wedge heel, and as I was looking for a new pair of low-heeled black shoes, they were a timely find.

And again, Visible Monday at Not Dead Yet Style, which is always a good way to start the week.

I’m back in black and white (well, cream) again, as you see. I spent a somewhat grubby weekend in the garden or the garden centre, and felt the need for an infusion of chic come Monday. Black and white is my go-to for feeling chic, so here we are.

It’s funny, but I DO always feel highly visible in black and white, particularly when I’m wearing this coat. I’m tall, it’s got slight padding in the shoulders, and it’s fairly long, so I’m presenting a fairly large visual target, which is fine with me, because this coat is one of my all-time best thrift scores, and I love it a lot. New with tags, not even the back vent cut open yet, and pretty much exactly what I’d been wanting for quite a long time. Yet another example of why thrifting is awesome.

Trench: Oasis, thrifted, remixed.

Boat neck tee: Dorothy Perkins. I love a boat neck, and I’m totally over caring about whether or not they’re flattering on the busty and broad-shouldered. I really want a fairly fitted black boat neck jumper, but I’m having a very hard time finding one right now. It’s on my hit list, and in the meantime, I’ll make do with this tee.

Watch: Lorus. New, very cheap, but cheery, and much less formal than my gold-and-steel watch.

Owl pendant: Mango. It may just be showing as metallic, but it’s actually mostly cream enamel. I know necklaces like these are all over the place, but I’ve resisted until I found one that wasn’t too blinged out. I wanted one for sentimental reasons; my late paternal grandmother loved owls and collected owl stuff, and she had a necklace pretty similar to this during my ’70s childhood. I wish I had it, but I’ve no idea what became of it, so this will be my remembrance placeholder.

Belt: Gap, remixed.

Shorts: All Saints, remixed. I love these so much! I’m surprised I do, since they’ve got the dreaded pleats and side slash pockets, but love them I do.

Tights: M&S, remixed.

Oxfords: Deichmann, remixed.

I’m definitely pushing my own boundaries on skirt-length with this one. I pulled it out of my wardrobe this morning, thought, why on earth don’t I wear this? I wore it once before now that I can recall, and I like it, but I haven’t worn it since. Then I put it on, and went, oh, right.

Thing is, after the first few minutes, I didn’t feel at all self-conscious in this. I think a good deal of my comfort in wearing short skirts At My Age, Really is found in the fact that I do not show a lot of flesh as a general rule. My cleavage is usually well-covered, and I mostly wear opaque tights, and ALWAYS wear opaque tights when wearing a skirt this short. My personal go-to rule on skirt length is to ask myself if I’d wear a pair of shorts in the same length, and if the answer is yes, then I’m OK with it. I wouldn’t wear something this short to a formal or otherwise solemn event, but on a day where I’ll mostly just be running errands and such? Definitely.

I have so many body issues and so much fallout from years and years of battling eating disorders. As I’ve said before, the one part of my body I love without reservation is my legs. Always. I’ve loved them at whatever weight or body shape I’ve been at any given time. I am consciously and deliberately rejecting age-based social programming on this one. Only I will determine what is too short and what is age-appropriate for me. After all, I’m not harming a single soul by displaying my legs.

I really love this suede jacket. I’ve only had it for a few weeks, but it’s rocketed to the top tier of my all-time thrift scores already. I almost rejected it for being a bit too big, but then decided to go for it anyway, because I’m sure a time will come when I’ll be happy to wear it over a heavier jumper, and I haven’t regretted it.

I had a pretty good weekend. We got another 3 cubic metres of mulch spread in the garden, and on Saturday afternoon I went to a vintage fair in Liverpool. Lots of ’80s vintage stuff — you could hardly move for gigantic shoulder pads and butt-ruffles — which isn’t my style, and anyway, I’ve definitely already been there and done that. (The 80s were my high school and college years.) I did pick up a pair of men’s vintage 501 cut-offs, and the fit confirms my suspicion that if I want really snug-fitting thighs in my next pair of shrink-to-fit 501s, men’s are probably the way to go.

Scarf: Long since detagged. I think I got this at H&M.

Skirt: Vintage, no tags. The vintage fair I went to on Saturday is a regularly-occurring one (it takes place at The Bluecoat in Liverpool, if any locals are passing through), and I bought this at the previous one. I really love the print and the colours and the ribbon panels.

Tights: Dorothy Perkins, remixed. I didn’t quite have the right kind of hot pink to match the ribbons in the skirt, so I went with olive instead.

Bag: Fossil, remixed.

Boots: Malmo, Duo, remixed.
